Best Natural Cleaners

What you put down your drains and toilets will affect your drinking water. Nowhere is this more true than in cabins and rural homes using a well and septic system. So not only are natural cleaners better for the planet (in manufacturer, use, and afterlife) – but it’s better for you.

If you’re not already familiar – EWG.org maintains a wonderful resource of all household chemicals. Below are our two cents on what to be on the lookout for along with our recommended products.

Natural Household Cleaners That Won’t Harm Septic Systems

Since septic systems use anaerobic bacteria to process waste – you’ll want to avoid anything antibacterial. Even wiping down a sink can easily wash down the drain and wreak havoc on your system.

You’ll also want to ensure you’re not using anything that can’t be processed by the septic system or soils – leaving it to migrate into your drinking water.

Natural General Cleaner

Cleaners get used on sinks, countertops, and towels that then end up rinsed. For that reason, it’s best to stick with an all-purpose cleaner that’s septic-friendly.

Bath/Tile/Shower Cleaner

Natural Floor Cleaners

Mops, buckets, and microfiber pads all end up rinsed, drained, and/or put through the laundry. For that reason, it’s best to stick with floor cleaners that are septic-friendly.
